Kanchenjunga Trek in 100 Pictures
My favourite pictures from the trip to Nepal in March 2014. It is hard to choose from so many pictures but this is the set that I believe shows the most interesting moments I had around Kathmandu and during the Kanchenjunga trek.
-
Around Kathmandu
Scenes and faces from Kathmandu and its surroundings: Thamel, Bodhnath, Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath and Kokhana
-
Patan and Bhaktapur
Two classic tourist destinations around Kathmandu: the ancient cities of Patan and Bhaktapur
-
Kanchenjunga South - The Lower Himalaya
Some of my favorites from the first part of the Kanchenjunga trek. Most of the walk here is at low altitudes of about 2000 m, the scenery is green and it is full of warm and friendly people.
-
Kanchenjunga South - Into the Wild
Pictures from the higher and wilder part of the Kanchenjunga South trek. There are no villages here, only a few lodges most of which were closed in March. This is the place where green disappears and gives way to barren rocky landscapes and big icy mountains.
-
Kanchenjunga South - To Oktang and Back
This is one of the reasons people do the Kanchenjunga trek! A couple of perfect days at high altitude, lots of sun and snow and big mountains all along the way.
-
Crossing Mirgin La
These pictures are from a long day of crossing of a series of passes between Kanchenjunga's south and north valleys. The day begins with a steep ascent and ends with an even steeper descent into the village of Ghunsa. Great views in all directions and lots of snow too.
-
Ghunsa
A couple of days spent in Ghunsa - the most important village in the north valley of Kanchenjunga. Snow covered the village after we arrived and completely changed the scenery within a night.
-
Kanchenjunga North - Kambachen
Kambachen (4145 m) is the next stop above Ghunsa towards Kanchenjunga's North base camp. It offers some of the best views of one of the world's most beautiful and difficult to climb mountains - Jannu (7710 m)
-
Kanchenjunga North - Lhonak
Lhonak is situated at the edge of a dry lake near the lateral moraine of Kanchenjunga Glacier - just a few kilometers from the borders with India and Tibet. It is cold and wind-swept and desolate but stunningly beautiful in its own right.
-
Kanchenjunga North - Pangpema
Here is the high point of Kanchenjunga trek - both literally and as a figure of speech. These pictures are from a day hike from Lhonak to Pangpema (5140 m) and back. This is the only place from the trek where one can see the North Face of Kanchenjunga.
-
Kanchenjunga North - Back to Suketar
Pictures from the 5-days-long descent back to Suketar that completed the loop and finished the trek around Kanchenjunga
